‘Contained’ is an effort in experimenting with layers of containment as a theme for design.

The individual shipping containers form the first layer of containment, i.e. they each hold a functional space and contain an activity - a living container, sleeping containers, a cooking and eating container.

The orientation and alignment of these individual containers with each other leads to the creation of visually bounded open and semi open spaces - a containment of the open, the natural and the non functional. This forms the second layer of containment.

The third layer of containment involves the site and surroundings beyond the visual fabric of the project - an unending, all encompassing layer.

We see this experiment akin to a three layered Russian matryoshka doll, but one that has no defined order in our eyes. Between these three layers of containment (outside/inside, natural/artificial, functional/non functional) that at some instances pull and push against each other while at times seamlessly merge, one finds the birth of a wild concoction of spaces, sights and senses that we like to call ‘Contained’.
